The two fleets of the Indian Navy—the Eastern Fleet, located in Visakhapatnam, and the Western Fleet, based in Mumbai—are its cutting edge units. In addition to the Fleets, each of the three locations—Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, and Port Blair (A & N Islands)—has a flotilla that is responsible for local naval defense in those areas.

In order to provide a continuous naval presence in the regions of national importance, navy vessels are also stationed at other ports along the East and West coasts of India as well as the island possessions. Additionally, each Command is overseen by a number of Naval Officer-in-Charges (NOICs) who are in charge of the Local Naval Defence of the ports that fall under their purview.

All three services share responsibility for the defense of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is managed by the headquarters of Andaman & Nicobar Command, which is based in Port Blair. A Commander-in-Chief, chosen in turn from the three Services, leads this, the only Tri-Services Command in the Indian Armed Forces. The Lakshadweep group of islands’ Local Naval Defence falls under the purview of the Naval Officer-in-Charge.
