About Haldwani
The largest city in Kumaon is Haldwani, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, it is also the most densely populated city and biggest commercial market. With the highest concentration of commercial, industrial, and economic activity in the state, Haldwani is considered the financial capital of Uttarakhand. One of the eight subdivisions in the Nainital District is called Haldwani. The Haldwani Urban Agglomeration is Uttarakhand’s third-most populous UA, behind Dehradun and Haridwar. The Kathgodam neighbourhood in Haldwani, which is located in the rapid foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas, is referred to as the “Gateway to Kumaon”.
Following the British defeat of the Gorkhas and their acquisition of Kumaon through the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816, Gardner was named Commissioner of Kumaon. Halduvaani was later renamed as Haldwani in 1834 after George William Traill assumed the position of Commissioner. Although the location was likely founded in 1834, according to British records, as a mart for hill people traveling to the Bhabhar area in the winter. Only after 1850 did brick homes start to be constructed.
Haldwani is a major hub for commerce, having excellent road and rail connections to the Indo-Gangetic plain, including New Delhi, Dehradun, Lucknow, and Kolkata. One of the biggest markets for fruits, vegetables, and food grains in northern India is located there.cBeing the entry point to the majority of Kumaon, its strategic location as an administrative depot for cargo en route to the hills makes it a significant source of revenue for Uttarakhand. Every year, a significant amount of boulders, sand, and gravel are extracted from the Gaula River, which provides a significant amount of income for the local economy and government.

On March 19, 1997, Uttar Pradesh Governor Shri Romesh Bhandari laid the groundwork for the medical college. The college enrolled its first 100 MBBS students in May 2004.
In April of 2010, the “Uttarakhand Forest Hospital Trust” was dissolved .The Department of Medical Education (Government of Uttarakhand) assumed control of all five trust-operated institutions on May 1, 2010, renaming them Government Medical College, Haldwani,Nainital
The main campus is located on Rampur Road in Haldwani and spans an area of more than 80 acres .In addition to the teaching and administrative buildings, the campus’s interior is well-kept and features wide roads, lawns, residential complexes, and sports complexes. Currently under construction is an auditorium with a capacity of more than thousand people.
Each year, there are distinct dorms for boys and girls that can accommodate up to 200 students each.
The Medical Council of India and the Government of India have recognized Government Medical College, Haldwani as the first postgraduate institution in Uttarakhand. The medical college currently has 65 postgraduate seats available in a range of departments.
Research and development in Medical Oncology in Uttarakhand Medical College
Government Medical College, Haldwani is also home to the operational Swami Rama Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. Formally inaugurated on February 22, 2010, it was intended and started as a State of Art Cancer Centre. This center will soon receive the designation of Uttarakhand State Cancer Institute. Nevertheless, the radiotherapy department is currently the only operational division of the Swami Rama Cancer Hospital. The state’s population is currently being severely impacted by the absence of the oncological specialties of medical oncology, surgical oncology, haematological oncology, gynaecological oncology, and paediatric oncology.
A student’s merit in a competitive exam: NEHT While 85 percent of seats are filled through state quotas, 15percent of students are admitted through the All India Quota. The same is true for postgraduate programs ; of these, approximately fifty percent of the seats are filled through the All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination and the remaining 50 percent through entrance exams administered at the state level.
