With German assistance, the first integrated steel plant in India’s public sector, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), was established with a 1 million tonne installed capacity. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the Indian President at the time, lit the country’s first blast furnace, known as “Parvati,” on February 3, 1959.
The first facility in India to use LD steelmaking technology was RSP. It is the sole facility owned by SAIL that manufactures premium pipes for the oil and gas industry as well as silicon steels for the power industry. Various flat, tubular, and coated goods are part of its extensive and sophisticated product range.
There are four iron ore mines within the boundaries of the Odisha group of Mines of the Rourkela Steel Plant: Bolani, Barsuan, Kalta, and Taldihi. These mines have a combined yearly capacity of 20.05 million tonnes, which they use to offer raw materials to outside clients in addition to meeting the needs of SAIL plants.

In order to develop a new paradigm for overseeing industry, the Ministry of Steel and Mines drafted a policy statement. On December 2, 1972, the policy statement was brought before the Parliament. This gave rise to the idea of forming a holding company to oversee inputs and outputs under one roof.
As a result, Steel Authority of India Ltd. was established. The company was given management responsibility for five integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela, and Burnpur, as well as the Alloy Steel Plant and the Salem Steel Plant. It was founded on January 24, 1973, with an authorized capital of Rs. 2000 crore. 1978 saw a reorganization of SAIL into an operational business.

Under the RCS UDAN Scheme, commercial aviation service at the Rourkela Airport, owned by Rourkela Steel Plant, began in January 2023.
