About Assam State
The earliest known written accounts of history may come from the Chinese traveler Huan Tsang, who traveled to Assam in the seventh century, when King Bhaskarvarman was ruling the region. Tsang called King Bhaskarvarman “the aristocratic king of Eastern India” and a “devotee of Lord Shiva.” The invasion of the Tai Ahom clans from Northern Myanmar in the thirteenth century is the main event that defines the medieval era. For the next six hundred years, the Ahoms ruled over the Brahmaputra valley, and the Buranji chronicles chronicled their victories.
Eventually, in the 19th century, the British East India Company arrived and began colonizing the area. “The plains of Assam, parts of East Bengal, and foothills of Bhutan” is how British historian Edward Gait described the boundaries of Assam. Under their rule, the Brahmaputra valley’s plains were combined with the nearby hills and tribal regions to create the state of Assam, which got its name from the Ahom word “Axom,” which means “the land like no other.”
The entire Northeast region of the nation, which was formerly part of the State of Assam, fell under the jurisdiction of SEBA. The jurisdiction of SEBA decreased when the provinces/states of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh were split off from Assam at various points in time and established their own boards of school education. Currently, the Board has jurisdiction over the entirety of the State of Assam.
Resources found in Assam are abundant. The following categories apply to Assamese natural resources: mineral, forest, water, and agricultural resources. With its abundance of tropical rainforests, forests of deciduous trees, riverine grasslands, bamboo orchards, and various wetland ecosystems, the State is home to some of the world’s most diverse biomes.
Assam is home to the world’s largest tea growing region, accounting for nearly one-seventh of all tea produced worldwide. The Camellia assamica variety is one of its own. More than half of the tea produced in the nation is produced in this state. One of the biggest CTC tea auction center in the world, the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), is located in the state.
A sizable portion of India’s output of rice, rapeseed, mustard, jute, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, papayas, areca nuts, and turmeric comes from Assam. Large varieties of citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, useful grasses, herbs, spices, and other crops—mostly subsistence crops—can also be found in Assam.

In order to establish a Board of Secondary Education and to oversee, develop, and regulate Secondary Education in the State of Assam, the Assam Secondary Education Act, 1961 (also known as the Assam Act, XXV of 1961) was passed. With the release of the Government of Assam, Education Department Notification no. 159/61/37 dated 29/1/1962, the Act became operative on January 29, 1962. Thus, on March 14, 1962, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam—commonly referred to as SEBA—was established. It began operations in 1962 with the administration of the 11-year H.S.S.L.C. Examination.
